It’s likely you’ve heard people gearing up, prepping, and getting excited for the once in a lifetime event happening April 8, 2024: the Total Solar Eclipse. The last total solar eclipse to cross North America was in 2017, and while Kansas may not be in the path of totality this time, that doesn’t make the event any less historic nor places across the state not excited to celebrate! We’ve compiled a small list of Eclipse Events happening across the state for you and your family to enjoy.

Please note: this is not a complete list of events across the state. Be sure to check with your local organizations to see if they are holding a watch party!

Cosmosphere | Hutchinson

Back to Top of List

Join the Cosmosphere and the Hutchinson Public Library on Monday, April 8, from 12:00 to 3:00 pm in the Cosmosphere’s south parking lot for a partial solar eclipse viewing party! (Weather permitting) While Hutchinson, Kansas, won’t be in the path of totality, we will still experience an 85% obscuration or partial eclipse. Enjoy food trucks, free activities, and the partial eclipse!

Cosmosphere will have several binocular and telescope stations to view the partial solar eclipse safely. Families can make UV (ultraviolet) bracelets, plus there will be many eclipse activities from the Cosmosphere and Hutchinson Public Library to enjoy. So bring your lawn chairs (don’t forget your eclipse viewing glasses) and prepare to have some solar fun!

Wetlands Education Center | Great Bend

Back to Top of List

While Great Bend, KS will not be in the path of totality for the April 8 solar eclipse, the moon will obscure 82.5% of the sun for our viewing. The Kansas Wetlands Education Center has an afternoon of games, science experiments, snacks, crafts, and safe viewing opportunities planned. We encourage visitors to bring a lawn chair and their lunch to enjoy the festivities.

Activities will include other safe viewing methods, learning about the moon phases (with a sweet treat), exploring how animals react during an eclipse, and creating a UV bead bookmark and an eclipse necklace to commemorate the event! Lawn games will be available around our picnic shelter, and we will show a variety of eclipse-related videos in our auditorium.
