Kansas is known as a sports state. For die-hard fans, sports fanatics, and team followers Kansas is full of places to live out your fandom. Watch nationally recognized teams from the storied Kansas Jayhawks, to the legendary K-State Wildcats, to the die-hard Wichita Shockers, plus five schools competing in Division II athletics. Kansas is also home to the NJCAA DI Men's Basketball Annual Championship in Hutchinson.
The University of Kansas Jayhawks
Known for its six-time national championship men’s basketball program, the University of Kansas Jayhawks compete in 16 Division I sports in the Big 12 Athletic Conference. Historic Phog Allen Fieldhouse is one of college basketball’s most acclaimed and celebrated buildings and home to the original rules of basketball in the Debruce Center. David Booth Kansas Memorial Football Stadium hosts Jayhawk football home games. Find women’s soccer, track and field, tennis, and more at Rock Chalk Park in West Lawrence.
Kansas State University Wildcats
With more than 80 Big 12 Conference Championships from 16 varsity-level sports, K-State is known for Wildcat pride and tailgating outside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. When it comes to Kansas sports, the rivalry between the Kansas State Wildcats and the Kansas University Jayhawks is historic and renowned. With teams playing in the NCAA Big 12 Athletic Conference, the purple and white reign over beautiful Manhattan. Other top rivalries include Iowa State and Nebraska.
Wichita State University Shockers
The Wichita State Shockers have 15 NCAA Division I Teams, plus a wide range of intramural and club sports. The men’s basketball team has made 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Final Four twice, the Elite 8 four times, and the Sweet 16 six times. Men’s and women’s basketball teams play home games at Charles Koch Arena, where it averaged 10,391 fans per game in 2012, ranking 38th nationally.
Emporia State Hornets/Lady Hornets
Emporia State competes in NCAA Division II and is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The Lady Hornets basketball team won the 2010 NCAA championship. Emporia State competes in 15 varsity level sports including men’s baseball, women’s soccer, football, cross country, and tennis.
Fort Hays State Tigers
The Fort Hays State Tigers participate in the NCAA Division II Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), although wrestling competes as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). The men's basketball team claimed national championships in 1984 and 1985 (NAIA), back to back, and in 1996 (NCAA Division II) with a remarkable 34 and 0 record. The women's basketball team also brought home the national title in 1991 (NAIA). In football, Fort Hays State earned their first MIAA conference championship in 2017. Fort Hays State competes in 16 varsity level sports including men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball, golf, and women’s volleyball.
Pittsburg State Gorillas
The Pittsburg State Gorillas compete in 12 NCAA Division II sports and in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The football teams have earned four national championships in 1957, 1961, 1991, and 2011, and 27 conference championships since 1908. Other sports include basketball, cross country, track and field, and women’s volleyball.
Washburn Ichabods
The Ichabods are a member of the NCAA Division II and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The women’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II national championship in 2005. The men’s basketball team won the NAIA national championship in 1987. The Ichabods compete in 14 varsity level sports including men’s baseball, women’s softball, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, and track and field.
Newman Jets
The Newman Jets are the sports teams of Newman University in Wichita. The Jets compete in 19 varsity level sports including men and women’s bowling, golf, triathlon, men’s wrestling, and women’s cheer and dance, in addition to basketball, football, and cross-country. They compete in the NCAA Division II and in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
