Things to do in Oakley, Kansas

"STOP FOR THE LEGEND, STAY FOR THE DAY"

Centrally located between Denver and Topeka off I-70, U.S. 83, and U.S. 40, Oakley is in the heart of Northwest Kansas.  Oakley is the mid-point of the 102-mile Western Vistas Historic Byway, Kansas' first designated Historic Byway. Our byway is rich in geological, western, Native American, and military history.   At the Buffalo Bill Cultural and Visitor Center "The Birthplace of the Legend" of Buffalo Bill is celebrated with our monumental bronze sculpture of Buffalo Bill on his favorite horse Brigham aiming at a buffalo.  Many fossils and other artifacts depicting the history of our area are on display at the Fick Fossil and History Museum and the Keystone Gallery.  Just south of Oakley you'll find the Kansas Badlands,  Monument Rocks, and Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park. These towering geologic remnants of the ancient inland seaway that once covered the region are an excellent example of where fossils of ancient sea creatures have been found.
