Known as the “Gateway to the Gyp Hills,” Medicine Lodge is a unique and historic community established in 1873.
A town of about 2,000 residents, Medicine Lodge has much more to offer than a typical small rural community. Enjoy unique shopping and public art on our red brick Main Street. Savor local flavor at one of our hometown eateries. Wake up to unforgettable prairie views at a country bed and breakfast. History buffs will enjoy our numerous historical sites and can experience the past in person at the Stockade Museum and Carry Nation Home. Opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts abound, such as fishing, camping, and hiking at Barber State Fishing Lake, along with hunting, biking, bird watching, and trail riding.
MSN declared the nearby Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway the "best scenic byway in Kansas," and no traveler should miss the drive west of town. For the more adventurous, an additional backroads "Scenic Drive" gives sightseers a more up-close look at this area, one of Kansas' best-kept secrets.
Medicine Lodge is home to the legendary Peace Treaty Festival and Pageant: a festival that pays homage to the land and the people who have claimed Medicine Lodge as their own throughout the centuries. This annual festival features a ranch rodeo, a bulls and broncs rodeo, the Medicine Lodge Intertribal Powwow, a melodrama, parades, and more. Held every September, the festival takes place in the prairie setting of Memorial Peace Park, just east of Medicine Lodge. Every third year the Peace Treaty Pageant historical reenactment joins the lineup.
