Things to Do in McFarland, Kansas

Exit off I-70 to McFarland where you can imagine life in this small town in the 1800’s. The history of the beginning of this small town began on October 6, 1868, when a patent from President Andrew Johnson, was issued to Zo-Za Mnis-non-se, of the Pottawatomie Nation of Indians, in accordance with a treaty dated November 15, 1861 and supplemented treaty dated March 29, 1866, allotting certain lands to certain Indians.  He received title to 147 acres, where McFarland is located today.

When S.H Fairfield learned that the railroad’s plans to establish a junction at this location, he purchased 80 acres of the original 147 acres and named his new town McFarland, after his friend Judge N.C. McFarland from Topeka, because another town he had originated was already named after him.

To learn more of the history, visit City Hall & Heritage Center where artifacts and railroad memorabilia are exhibited inside the former Rock Island Depot that doubles as City Hall.

Attractions include a restored Depot, a Farmer’s Market held in the beautiful park on the fourth Saturday May-October along with many other activities sponsored by the McFarland Pride committee.
