Lane is located in the southeast corner of Franklin County; it was first chartered in 1858 as Shermanville. The town name was changed in 1863 to Lane. The town’s rich history revolves around the events of the Civil War era. One of the historical events associated with this town is the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre. The town was named for James Henry Lane who was a leader of the Jayhawker abolitionist movement and also one of Kansas’s first Senators.
