Things to do in La Cygne, Kansas

La Cygne (pronounced La-Seen) is a city in Linn County, KS with roughly 1000 residents. The town's etymology comes from the Marais des Cygnes which is a French translation of an Osage Tribe phrase - "marsh of the swans."

The early days of La Cygne were spent as a major rail depot and, like many communities in southeast Kansas, as space for coal mining. The growing demand for energy and the need to have the nation be better connected via rail lines made La Cygne a major industrial hub in the 1870s and 1880s.

Today, the city is located near the Frontier Military Historic Byway, the longest Byway in Kansas, stretching from Oklahoma to Nebraska in the easternmost counties.
