Welcome to Canton - "The Gateway to Maxwell Wildlife Refuge," where natural beauty and wildlife get to roam freely! Located on the Prairie Trail Scenic Byway in Mcpherson County, the city of Canton received its name after the city of Canton, Ohio. Historically, railroad companies sought to expand through the lands of Mcpherson County so that they could be better connected to the cattle trails that ran across Dodge City and Liberal. Canton was established as a small community just beside the city of McPherson to best serve the rain lines. Despite its strategic location for rail service, the community suffered from heavy flooding in 1993 and was forced to abandon some of the routes running through the county.
