"The Border Queen City" title was given to Caldwell as she was the first sign of civilization on the dusty Chisholm Trail after herding Texas longhorns up through Indian Territory. A town sprung in 1871 to accommodate the needs of the weary cowboy. Gambling, saloons, dance halls were all bustling, and keeping a marshal alive proved tough work. Caldwell sits on the border on Hwy 81 between Wichita and OKC. The vintage limestone buildings mark the downtown district as restaurants and community activities enliven the space with a Chisholm Trail Fest in the May and the Sumner County Fair in August. Excellent schools and a fiber-enriched town provide a young, progressive atmosphere to start a business and raise a family.
