Located in northeastern Cowley County is the county’s prime example of rural living – Atlanta. The community, which was incorporated in 1885, was founded as a cattle-shipping station along the Frisco Railroad. Agriculture continues to play a vital role in its local economy.
Atlanta residents are vested in their community. The fire department boasts 23 volunteers and an impressive inventory of equipment that is used to protect and serve the 180-square-mile district. Recent improvements include the addition of $500,000 in equipment to the fire department and $30,000 in the updating of Couch Memorial Park. The community may be small, but it is large at heart. It is not only a safe, rural setting in which to raise a family, but is easily accessible to those traversing the county and neighboring Wichita for pleasure and employment.
Atlanta offers many opportunities for all demographics through its various organizations, churches, new schools and recreation commission. Population of 195 according to the 2010 census. The school district is Central USD 462.
