Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup butter
- 6 apples
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 cups shortening
- 1/2 cup milk
- Additional sugar, cinnamon & nutmeg will be needed for inside the dumpling
DIRECTIONS
Make a syrup using sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg; add butter. Core and pare the apples. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder; cut in the shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until moistened. Roll 1/4-inch thick and cut into five-inch squares. Place whole apple on center of squares. Sprinkle with generous amounts of sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg; dot with butter. Fold corners to center and pinch edges together. Place one inch apart in a greased 9x13-inch glass baking pan. Pour syrup in the bottom pan. Bake 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Spoon syrup over dumplings, and serve hot with cream. Makes six large or eight medium dumplings.
