ROAD CLOSED DUE TO CONSTRUCTION. Between Colorado State Line and KS 27, a stretch of US 40 is closed due to bridge construction work until November 1, 2024. Wallace County is still open for business! See maps for various detours to help you reach your destination.
The city of Wallace is located on US-40 near the junction point of two major byways in Kansas: the Western Vistas Historic Byway and the Land & Sky Scenic Byway Originally founded under the name Fort Wallace, now the city of Wallace, it was named after General William Wallace, shortly after the end of the civil war. Wallace started as a safe haven for settlers traversing through the western high plains. A city that once was a safe haven for settlers, is now a safe haven for history, as the city contains the Fort Wallace Museum and the Fort Wallace Cemetery which are must-see sites for history buffs!
